Housing Rules and Regulations for 2018
Cleanliness and Hygiene :
You have the responsibility to maintain a clean and safe living environment which does not infringe on the rights and privileges of other Residents – ensuring all communal areas (kitchens, lounge areas) remain clean and tidy. Unclaimed and dirty dishes in communal kitchens may be confiscated after two days. Non-compliance may result in penalties (per the Schedule of Fees) and sanctions.
One scheduled room inspection may be conducted each semester with one (1) weeks’ notice. Rooms with a ‘No Cleaning’ sign can be accessed for cleaning after two weeks. Accommodation Services can access a room at any time to conduct an inspection to maintain hygiene and safety standards.
Bed linen must be covering the mattress at all times.
As you will come into contact with other individuals through shared living spaces, you have the responsibility to disclose to Accommodation Services if you have a communicable disease, illness or infection. Accommodation Services has the right to remove or relocate you from the residential precinct to ensure the health and safety interests of any individual(s).

Utilities and use:

  • Utilities are included.
  • There are water restrictions throughout Australia, and short showers are expected.
  • Heating and air conditioning are generally used sparingly. So in the warm months do not expect it to be freezing indoors and in the colder months students are expected to dress for weather.
  • Always turn off the lights when you leave the apartment and when you are not in the room.

Safety:

  • You should lock the dorm door at all times. Also, when leaving, make sure the windows are closed and locked. Neither the study abroad company nor the housing company will be responsible for any stolen items.
  • If the keys are left inside the apartment/bedroom and the locksmith has to open the door for you, you will have to pay for this service.
  • It is strictly forbidden to throw any object or substance from windows, balconies, terraces or roofs. This includes keys, water, or anything else big or small, liquid or solid.

Guests, Drug & Alcohol Policies:

  • The University is a drug-free institution and the use, possession, dealing of or being under the influence of illicit or non-prescribed drugs (includes any substances or synthetic mimics of a drug that have, or are intended to have, intoxicating and/or psychotropic effects) on campus is strictly prohibited.
  • La Trobe University is a smoke-free campus. You are not permitted to smoke inside your room, on the residential premises or any area of the University, other than the designated locations. Frequent failure to abide by the University’s Smoke Free Policy may result in discussions with
you about your suitability for residence. Smoking of substances other than cigarettes (includes any substances or synthetic mimics of a drug that have, or are intended to have, intoxicating and/or psychotropic effects) is also prohibited on the residential precinct and sanctions may apply.
  • While alcohol is allowed in the residences, you are to engage in and ensure the safe and responsible consumption the alcohol while on residential premises.
  • Visitors and guests are not permitted to be in residences after 10pm or before 9am without completing the designated guest registration process.

Financial Liability:

  • You will have to pay for any damage done to the accommodation (doors, walls, floors, furniture, kitchen supplies, washing machine, etc.).
  • If extra time is needed to clean the residence, or if items are damaged or missing, you will be charged and those charges will be deducted from your housing deposit. Housing deposits will be returned 8-12 weeks after the program has ended.

Helpful tips for living with other people:

  • Respect your floor mates and the other people who live in the building.
  • Remember that you are on a college campus and not in your own home. Respect the property and get out of the “college campus” mentality.
  • Talk to your roommates if they do something that bothers you. Talking it through is the easiest way to solve a small problem before it gets bigger.
  • Talk to the residential staff if a problem arises and you cannot work it out with your floormates.

Warning process:

  • If any of the above rules are broken, you will first receive a verbal warning. The second warning is written and will also be sent to your home school.
  • The third infraction of any of the above rules will result in you being evicted from your residence. You will need to find a new place to live at your own expense. For a major breach of the above rules, such as taking or storing drugs, could result in eviction without prior warning. CISabroad and the housing providers maintain the right to skip any of the warnings if the situation warrants.
  • Please read through all of our behavior policies noted in the CISabroad Policy Handbook, linked inside of the attachment to your acceptance email.
