Group excursion to The Extreme North; 8 am – 5.30 pm, (approximate return time)
Today we’re going to discover the natural north of Martinique! We take the “Trace”-road taking us through the rainforest, where our first stop is the beautiful “Saut du Gendarme” waterfall. There’s a basin under the waterfall where you can have a little dip! Then we continue, passing through Morne-Rouge, to arrive at the little village of Ajoupa-Bouillon where we’ll visit the “Gorges de la Falaise” nature site. This is a canyon and a waterfall situated down in a lush valley. A guide will lead us to the canyon (and back), where you will climb up the river and some ladders over rocks, to arrive at the beautiful waterfall. After this refreshing experience, we hop back to the bus to drive down to the Caribbean coast, towards Prêcheur. There we will first visit the gardens of Habitation Céron, an old cocoa plantation in ruins, where you’ll get to see the biggest tree of the West-Indies, an old zamana. We finish the day with beach time on the wild, black-sand beach of Anse Céron.
Please note: Students need to have their bathing suits and towels, preferably water shoes or old sneakers to go to the river in Gorges de la Falaise (no flip flops), water bottles. The access to the site depends on the weather conditions, in case of heavy raining the site is closed for security reasons. The stairs down to the gorges are very steep and long so they should be prepared for some sports! Lunch possibilities in the north very limited, so exceptionally for this excursion students need to prepare a sandwich or other in advance to eat during the day.
