Daily Itinerary – Ohio in Sicily

Tentative Program Itinerary (updated 5/26)
Day 1: Saturday, June 4, 2016 – Catania
11:15am-12pm: Students arrive in Catania, meet the CISabroad onsite program coordinator (OPC), and transfer to accommodations (look for Consuelo with her “CISabroad: Ohio University” sign)
Afternoon: CISabroad onsite orientation followed by a visit to Castello Ursino
Evening: Welcome dinner at Vineria Picasso
Meals: Dinner
Transportation: Catania airport to accommodations (taxis), to all other visits (walking and public transportation)
Day 2: Sunday, June 5, 2016 – Catania
Morning: Visit the Duomo, walking tour
Afternoon: Visit a local bar for a pastry tasting
Meals: Breakfast
Transportation: Accommodations to activities (walking and public transportation)
Day 3: Monday, June 6 – Catania
Morning: Visit Piazza Carlo Alberto for the morning market, followed by the “Pescheria,” or fish market
Afternoon: Visit the University of Catania, Facolta of Humanities (tentative)
5-6pm: Guided Palazzo Biscari tour
Meals: Breakfast
Transportation: Accommodations to activities (walking and public transportation)
Day 4: Tuesday, June 7, 2016 – Catania
Day: Free time to explore – La Vida Local suggestions to be made by CISabroad On-Site Program Coordinator.
Suggested activity: Travel to Acitrezza and Acicastello to enjoy the beaches.

Day 5: Wednesday, June 8, 2016 – Taormina
Day trip to Taormina for a guided tour of this beautiful hill town

Day 6: Thursday, June 9, 2016 – Paternò/Catania to Syracuse
Morning: Check out of Catania hotel, (students will bring luggage with them on the bus this morning)
Day trip to Paterno to visit the Camolio olive oil producers (visit pending)
Late afternoon: Arrive in Syracuse and transfer to accommodations. Brief neighborhood walking tour and orientation.

Day 7: Friday, June 10, 2016 –Syracuse
Morning: Visit the Ortigia market, guided by faculty
Afternoon: Lecture time
Meals: Breakfast
Transportation: To all visits (public transportation and walking)
Day 8: Saturday, June 11, 2016- Syracuse
Morning: Visit the Temple of Apollo, Piazza Duomo, and Castello Maniace followed by debrief time with faculty
Time TBC: Sicilian cooking class! Cook and eat your own authentic Italian meal
Meals: Breakfast, afternoon meal (cooking class)
Transportation: Accommodations to activities (walking)
Day 9: Sunday, June 12, 2016 – Syracuse
Day: Free time to explore – La Vida Local suggestions to be made by CISabroad On-Site Program Coordinator.
Suggested optional activities: Canoeing (€25 pp), biking (cost varies by rental duration) and/or visit a local beach!

Day 10: Monday, June 13, 2016 – Syracuse
Morning: Tour the Necropolis in Syracuse, including the Catacombs of St. John
Afternoon: Free time to explore – La Vida Local suggestions to be made by CISabroad On-Site Program Coordinator.

Day 11: Tuesday, June 14, 2016 –Syracuse
Day: Soup kitchen volunteering day! In the morning, the group will purchase ingredients from the local market, spend the afternoon preparing the meal and help feed the local community in the evening

Day 12: Wednesday, June 15, 2016 – Syracuse
Day: Visit the charming towns of Ragusa Ibla and Modica.
10:30am-1pm: Visit Corfilac for a visit to an experimental cheese factory, where you’ll learn about different phases of cheese making! After, you’ll partake in a tasting lab where you’ll learn more about the different types of cheese and get to sample many!
1-4pm: Lunch and free time, art and architectural tour by local guide
4:30-5pm: Tour Bonajuto Chocolate factory

Day 13: Thursday, June 16, 2016 – Syracuse
Day: Guided visit to the Jewish quarters, including the Jewish baths, the crypt and hypogeum under San Filippo, and the church of San Giovanello

Day 14: Friday, June 17, 2016 – Syracuse
Free day- faculty to check in with students on work, etc.

Free weekend in Ortigia

Day 17: Monday, June 20, 2016 – Palermo
Morning: Depart Syracuse for Palermo, arrive mid-day and check into Palermo accommodations
Afternoon: Walking tour of local area with OPC
Meals: Breakfast
Transportation: Syracuse to Palermo (regional bus), to all other visits (walking and public transit)
Day 18: Tuesday, June 21, 2016 – Palermo
9am-3pm: Guided tour of downtown Sicily, including Ballaro Market, Capo Market, Martorana Church, Palazzo Reale (Capella Palatina)
Meals: Breakfast
Transportation: To all visits (public transportation and walking)
Day 20: Wednesday, June 22, 2016 – Palermo
Morning: Visit San Giovanni degli Eremiti
4pm: Cheese, wine, and salami tasting at local shop (Enoteca Cana) in central Palermo
Meals: Breakfast

Day 21: Thursday, June 23, 2016 – Palermo
Day: After a morning stop at CIDMA Anti-mafia Museum, enjoy your last day in Sicily at a winery in Corleone, including a tour of the vineyards, wine tasting and a sumptuous Sicilian lunch! Bring your bathing suit and relax poolside after lunch

Day: Depart Palermo for the U.S.
