Get ready for fun and learning in Italy!

Program Itinerary:

Day 1: Sunday, January 3, 2016 – Rome
By 9:10 A.M. Participants arrive to Rome-FCO. Transfer to hotel by private coach. Time to rest and settle in.

Afternoon: CISabroad Orientation and neighborhood walking tour of the Trastevere neighborhood, led by Onsite Program Coordinator. *Download Rick Steve’s audio tour: Trastevere walk*

Evening: Welcome dinner

Meals: Welcome dinner
Transportation: Airport transfer (private coach), to all other visits (public transportation and walking)

Day 1: Monday, January 4, 2016 – Rome
9:00 A.M. Guided Rome City Tour – “Roma Antica” tour which will highlight the birth of the city of Rome and the foundations of how it became the city it is today.

2:00 P.M.-4:00 P.M. Guest lecture with Professor Bruno Grazioli, lecturer of Italian from Smith College. (Read his bio here!)

Day 3 -Tuesday, January 5, 2016 – Rome
Morning (exact time TBA): Designated class time, and meeting with Italian rapper Amir Issaa. Topics to be discussed will be Amir’s experience growing up in Rome as an Italian of Egyptian heritage, and the political and social themes about Italian society that he discusses in his music. His music has been recently featured in the Guardian!

3:00 P.M.  Visit the Galleria Borghese

5:00 P.M. Visit Santa Maria della Conciliazione and the Capuchin crypt) Be prepared to see lots of bones….

Day 4 – Wednesday, January 6, 2016 – Rome
Note: Today is a national holiday in Italy,  The Epiphany
11:30 A.M:  Business visit to Eataly

Description: The tour consists of a guided visit of the Eataly Roma store, with a discussion of the company and passing through major parts of interest. The visit will also include a tastings of: bread and pizza, fresh pasta, as well as beer, cheese, and Italian salumi.

3:25 P.M.: Visit the Colosseum and the Forum

Day 5 – Thursday, January 7, 2016 – Rome
9:00 A.M. – Noon: Designated class time

1:30 P.M.: Visit the Vatican Museums (including the Sistine Chapel) and St. Peter’s Basilica. *Download Rick Steve’s audio tour: St Peter’s Basilica & Sistine Chapel*

Following the visits, there will be an option to remain in the Prati district for some shopping and food stops!

6:00 – 8:00 P.M.: Walking tour of Rome by Night to see Rome’s quintessential piazzas and monuments

Day 6- Friday, January 8, 2016 – Rome
9:00 A.M. Visit to the Museo Laboratorio della Mente for a guided tour

Description: The museum follows the history of the Santa Maria della Pietà hospital complex in Rome from its founding as a hospital for poor foreigners and the insane, to its closing as a mental hospital 500 years later. The hospital’s history is a journey through the history of mental institutions, a story of hardship and diversity, of the fight against the stigma of mental illness, and for the promotion of mental health.

Afternoon: Designated classroom space, followed by a visit to BE FREE/Casa Internazionale delle Donne (exact times TBA)

Description: BE FREE is an NGO that provides counseling services, and psychological and legal assistance to women who are victims of domestic violence, as well as sexual exploitation. BE FREE is part of a larger umbrella of organizations of the Casa Internazionale Delle Donne that provide comprehensive services to women. There will be designates time for the president of BE FREE, Doctor Oria Gargano, to speak to the group, as well as a tour of the Casa Internazionale delle Donne.

Day 7 – Saturday, January 9, 2016 – Rome/Florence
7:45 A.M. Check out of accommodations and meet in the lobby for departure to Roma Termini train station

8:45 A.M. Depart Rome for Florence by train

10:15 A.M. Arrive in Florence, and transfer to accommodations by walking

Afternoon: Light stroll around Florence, and visit Santa Maria del Fiore (Florence’s Duomo) and the Santa Croce church. *Download Rick Steve’s audio tour: The Renaissance* Reminder: These are places of worship, and appropriate clothing is required.

Transportation: To train station in Rome (public transportation/walking), Rome to Florence (train), to all visits in Florence (walking)

Day 8 – Sunday, January 10, 2016 – Florence
9:00 A.M. – Noon: Designated class time. Included is a “coffee break” where you will have the option of Italian espresso, tea, fruit juice, water and cakes.

1:30 P.M. Visit the Pitti Palace

2:30 P.M. Visit the Boboli Gardens

5:00 P.M.-6:30 P.M.: Walking tour of Florence to hear about the city’s legends and ghost tales!

Day 9 – Monday, January 11, 2016 – Florence
10:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M. Foodie tour of Florence with CISabroad Site Director, Alessandro Bruno.

Notes: Please eat a light breakfast this morning!
Participants interested in cooking class must sign up with On-Site Program Coordinator and pay €30 by the end of the day. 

Tour description: The tour will begin with a morning coffee  and croissant at one of Florence’s best Espresso Bars. You will then visit the two main markets in Florence (Sant’Ambrogio e San Lorenzo), with food tasting at the Central Market (San Lorenzo). A gelato stop will finish up the tour!

2:00 – 4:00 P.M.: Business visit to Ganzo, the professional teaching restaurant of the Apicus International School of Hospitality at the Florence University of the Arts. Will also include a wine tasting, and a discussion on Italian table traditions.

Day 10: Tuesday, January 12, 2016 – Florence
Day: Day trip to Panzano in Chianti, and have lunch at the Antica Macelleria Checcchini

Meals: Breakfast, lunch

Transportation: Accommodations to and from Panzano (regional bus), to all other visits (walking)

Day 11 – Wednesday, January 13, 2016 – Florence
10:30 – 11:30 A.M.: Visit the Galileo Museum for a guided tour

12:30 – 2:00 P.M. Guest lecture at the Florence University of the Arts on the topic of Intercultural Communication, highlighting comparisons between US and Italian customs, and regionalism in Italy.

2:30 – 4:30 P.M. Guest lecture with Dr. Matteo Pretelli. The lecture will be an overview of the relationship between the US and Italy, and between Italy and the EU.

Day 12 – Thursday, January 14, 2016 – Florence
9:00 A.M. – Noon: Designated class time

3:00 – 5:30 P.M.: Optional cooking class at the Florence University of the Arts!

Day 13 – Friday, January 15, 2015 – Florence
Free day to travel and explore, with activity suggestions by CISabroad On-Site Program Coordinator. One suggestion is the Pitti, and international fashion exhibition going on in Florence! Click here to read more about the event.

Evening: Visit the Fattoria di Maiano, an organic free-range farm in Fiesole, a town just outside of Florence. Have a tour of the farm and gardens, with Farewell dinner to follow at the farm-to-table restaurant!

Day 14 – Saturday, January 16, 2015 – Florence/Rome
8:30 A.M. (or prior): Check out of rooms

9:00 A.M. – Noon: Designated class time, followed by a short break to eat then depart the hotel for the Florence train station.

1:30 P.M. Depart Florence for Rome by train

3:10 P.M. Arrive in Rome, and transfer to accommodations upon arrival.

4:00 P.M. Designated class time for final presentations

Evening: Farewell dinner reservation (everyone to pay individually)

Meals: Breakfast
Transportation: Hotel to Florence train station (walking), Florence to Rome (train), to all other visits (public transportation/walking)

Day 15 – Sunday, January 17, 2015 – Rome
5:00 A.M. Depart accommodations on private coach to Rome FCO airport in time for a 8:00 A.M. flight.
