Summer in Oman Excursions

Excursions are usually not finalized until around the time you will be arriving in country, but 2-3 excursions are included in the summer program, depending on the length of the program. In the meantime, look below to see some of the past excursions that CISabroad travelers have embarked on!

Jebel Akhdar

Jebel_Akhdar_viewTranslated as “The Green Mountain” in Arabic, Jebel Akhdar is home to some of the most breathtaking views in Oman. A central point in the Al Hajar mountain range, Jebel Akhdar receives just enough rainfall each year to sustain the growth of trees and shrubs. Since 2011, Jebel Akhdar has been designated as a nature reserve in order to preserve it’s unique and fragile biodiversity.

 

 

Nizwa

NizwaNizwa was the capital of Oman during the 6th and 7th centuries, but also the capital of the Ibadi Imamate as recently as 70 years ago. As one of the oldest cities in Oman, Nizwa was an important historical center of art, trade, and religion. For some of its history, it was also practically a separate country from Muscat.

 

 

 

 

The Wahiba Sands

Wahiba Sands, sunriseNamed for the Bani Wahiba tribe, the Wahiba Sands is a region of desert in eastern Oman. A surprising amount of plants and animals make their home here, as do a few thousand Bedouin. Experience the remarkable dunes, flats, and sunrises that make the Wahiba Sands such an important Omani destination.

 

 

Wadi Shab

wadi-shabNot far outside of Muscat is the Wadi Shab, a popular location for tourists, locals, and nature lovers to congregate. Take a swim in the clear, blue water or head out for a hike. There are even caves to explore!

 

 

 

Ras al-Jinz Turtle Reserve

ras al jinz turtlesThe Ras al-Jinz Turtle Reserve is a special conservation effort. There are rooms for visitors to spend the night as most of the tours out to the turtle’s nesting ground take place under the cover of darkness. If you’re lucky, you might just be able to see the mother turtles build their nests and bury their eggs or even watch hatchlings make their precarious journey to the ocean! High season for the turtles is between July and September.
