Traditions in Oman

Oman boasts one of the lowest crime rates in the world, and its people are generally viewed as warm and friendly. Despite this, it is important to realize that the culture and traditions in Oman are very different than those in the United States. For example, during the month of Ramadan (between June 6th 2016 and July 5th 2016), it is illegal  to eat or drink in public during the day. The same goes for obscene gestures and disrespectful language. It is also important for visitors to note that conservative clothing is the most appropriate. This means that you should choose clothing which shows as little skin as possible; even shorts or short sleeved T-shirts could be considered inappropriate. The most important thing to keep in mind is that you are entering an entirely different system of customs, and what might be commonplace for people in the United States may very well offend someone in Oman. Keep an open mind and your time in Oman will prove to be a very valuable experience.
