Housing in Ghana
Here are some general rules, tips, and expectations to help you become accustomed to your new home!
You will stay in university-owned en-suite housing in the UCC international building during your studies in Ghana. Most rooms are double occupancy with a shared common room, bath, and basic kitchen. Laundry is also available. Towels and linen are not provided, but can be purchased locally upon arrival. (We recommend bringing at least one towel from home to use in your room and during orientation.)
Meal plans are not offered, but there are cheap shops and places to eat (called “chop bars”) located near campus and the dorms, where you can purchase food and other items that you may need. Internet is only available at the Student Center or at nearby Internet cafés (for about $1/hour). The campus is incredibly safe, patrolled 24/7 by security, and no taxis are allowed in at night.
CHOP BARS:
Water disclaimer: Water pressure isn’t very strong at times, and hot water is not always available. But, there is a water tank available outside to fill buckets, which is common in Ghana.
Helpful tips for living with other people:
- Respect your roommates and the other people that live in the building.
- Remember that you are not in your own home. It is important to respect the property and get out of the “college campus” mentality.
- Talk to your roommates if they do something that bothers you. Talking it through is the easiest way to solve a small problem before it gets bigger.
- Talk to the staff if a problem arises and you cannot work it out with your roommates.
