Intern in Australia Packing/Preparing to Depart

Of course you also don’t want to find yourself abroad without the usual essentials! While you don’t want to overdo it and pack too much, there’s some important things that should get in your bags!

Remember to do some reading about the climate in Australia and pack accordingly. The Sydney region offers a temperate climate. Pack accordingly. Winter in Sydney is quite short and never extreme! A rain-jacket/windbreaker is a great idea! Especially one that packs down easy.

LUGGAGE

Every airline is different! Check your airline website for regulations on luggage/extra fees. This goes for both your carry-on and checked luggage.

  • Pack like you would a 2-week trip to this destination, then add in the professional outfit or two, and other essentials.
  • Your laptop and flash drives in case you ever need to get some work done remotely!
  • Cell phone — though you could also opt to buy one in country.
  • A daypack or large purse for day-to-day use
  • A camera (or smartphone)
  • A journal or notebook
  • A converter / adaptor for Australia (very easy to purchase on-site)
  • Good pair of walking shoes for those weekend adventures! (very important!)
  • Books/small comfort items
  • Medication/Doctors notes in CARRY-ON. You don’t want your luggage to get mixed up at the airport and miss something important!
  • Flight Information/Passport Copy/Credit and ATM Card

Quick tip: With toiletries and beauty products, pack travel-sized versions as you would for any other short trip. Then, plan on buying shampoo, conditioner, soap, etc. once you’re in country. This way, you can save your space for other stuff!
